“If you Google the Natchez Trace Parkway, it describes the bridge and its history and then it says ‘suicide bridge.’”

The stark reality, as renowned architect Kem Hinton explains, is that the Natchez Trace Parkway bridge in Williamson County has become a magnet for people wanting to take their own lives. The official government response has been slow, despite federal funds being allocated for a barrier along the bridge in 2019.

This video piece from the Banner’s Demetria Kalodimos examines the problems with both the bridge and the solution. Using footage obtained through the Tennessee Open Records Act, viewers will see not only the dangers involved and the lengths deputies go to in order to intervene, but also what a better alternative to the proposed barrier might be.
